The 4C's

Cut, Colour, Clarity, Carat

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting moments in your life. It's important to find a ring that is as unique and special as its intended. If you're planning that special engagement, Griffin Jewellery Designs can help you find or create the perfect ring to meet your needs.

The Cut

The cut of your diamond is its most important characteristic.

If a diamond is cut properly, it has more brilliance, radiance and fire.

When purchasing a diamond, look for the highest cut grade within your budget.

It is the precision and delicacy of a diamond's cut that determines the maximum amount of light that will be reflected through the diamond.

If the cut of a diamond is too shallow, light will leak out the bottom of the stone.

When a diamond is cut with 10 good proportions, light is reflected from one facet to another and then dispersed through the crown of the stone.

If the cut of a diamond is too deep, some light escapes through the side of the stone.

The Colour

The most sought after colour grade for a diamond is colourless.

A totally colourless diamond acts as a prism, and allows light to move effortlessly creating a rainbow.

Diamonds in shades of yellow or brown - such as champagne diamonds - are not very valuable.

Fancy coloured diamonds are considered very valuable. Fancy coloured diamonds come in canary yellow, red, blue and pink.

The Clarity

Virtually all diamonds contain traces of non-crystallized carbon.

A diamond that has fewer or smaller imperfections is typically considered more valuable. These imperfections are often to referred to as inclusions.

Diamonds with fewer inclusions will also have a greater light return.

A higher clarity grade will often intensify the brilliance of a diamond.

To determine clarity, a diamond is graded under 10 x magnifications by a trained eye.

"Inclusions are nature's fingerprints; they neither limit a diamond's beauty or affect its durability."

The Carat

As with all precious stones, the weight or size of a diamond is expressed in carats.

One carat is divided into 100 points; therefore, a diamond of 25 points is equal to a quarter of a carat.

Two diamonds of equal size can have very different values based on their quality.

High quality diamonds can be found in all size ranges.
